After a neck-to-neck battle which brought voters on the edge of their seats, DULAL CHANDRA GOSWAMI won the Katihar. TARIQ ANWAR was defeated by a margin of 57,203 votes.

Bahujan Samaj Party fieled Shivnandan Mandal while the Indian National Congress placed its bet on Shah Tariq Anwar, and the Janata Dal (United) chose Dulal Chandra Goswami as their candidate.
