What's the story

The National Highways Authority of India(NHAI) has partnered with Reliance Jio to launch a new mobile-based safety alert system. The initiative, aimed at improving travel safety on India's national highway network, will use Jio's 4G and 5G telecom network. The system will send advance warnings to travelers about risky or hazardous road sections, such as accident-prone stretches, fog-affected areas, emergency diversions, and more.

Communication strategy

Alerts to be delivered via multiple channels

The safety alert system will deliver warnings through SMS, WhatsApp messages, and high-priority calls. This multi-channel approach ensures that drivers are informed well in advance of approaching danger zones. The goal is to give them enough time to slow down or drive more cautiously. Rather than relying on new roadside warning boards or equipment, the system will work through Jio's existing telecom infrastructure for faster implementation.

Digital integration

Integration with NHAI's digital services

The safety alert system will also be integrated with NHAI's digital services, including the 'Rajmargyatra' mobile app and the national highway emergency helpline number 1033. Once integrated, travelers will be able to access safety updates and emergency assistance through a more coordinated digital network. The automated system will work for all Jio users traveling on or near National Highways, ensuring timely information delivery before entering identified danger zones.

Testing phase

Pilot projects to refine risk-zone identification

The first phase of the program will see pilot projects launched under a few regional NHAI offices. These trials will help identify risk zones more accurately and fine-tune alert levels before the system is expanded to other parts of the country. NHAI has said it plans to work with other telecom service providers as well to expand safety alert coverage across networks.
