JSW Defence and Shield AI set to build advanced military drones in Hyderabad
JSW Defence is teaming up with US-based Shield AI on a $90 million plan to build high-tech VBAT military drones in Hyderabad.
Production kicks off by late 2026, aiming to supply India's armed forces and boost India's standing as a global drone manufacturing hub.
What makes the VBAT drone special?
VBAT drones can take off and land vertically, fly for up to 10 hours, and operate at heights of over 6,000m.
They're compact enough for two people to set up in under 20 minutes, carry smart sensors for surveillance or border security, and use AI so they can operate even when GPS or comms are down.
Why does this matter?
This project isn't just about new tech—it's about building up India's own defense industry.
By making these advanced drones locally, the partnership helps India rely less on imports while giving its armed forces smarter tools for tough missions.
