Adele's 'Hello' wins Song of the Year at Grammys
Adele's 'Hello' won Song of the Year at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Chance the Rapper won the award for Best Rap Album and Best New artist. Beyonce, who won the Best Urban Contemporary Album trophy for 'Lemonade', gave a showstopping performance celebrating motherhood and "every child of every race." The singer-songwriter David Bowie was posthumously awarded five trophies for his album 'Blackstar'.
Grammys are the recording industry's most prestigious awards presented annually by 'The Recording Academy'. They were first awarded in the year 1958. The name Grammy, previously called Gramophone awards was chosen in a contest. They are awarded to honor excellence in the recording arts and sciences. Grammys are peer-recognized awards, presented by and to artists and technical professionals.
The 2017 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, on 12 February. The show will be hosted by comedian and "The Late Late Show" presenter James Corden. There are 83 categories at the Grammys which include the popular ones like "Record Of The Year", "Album Of The Year", etc,. Georg Solti holds the record for most Grammy awards (31).
Beyonce leads the nominations by being picked up in nine categories including for "Album Of The Year", "Record Of The Year", "Song Of The Year", "Best Pop Solo Performance", "Best Rock Performance", etc,. Rihanna, Drake, and Kanye West received eight nominations each, followed by Chance The Rapper who has seven nominations. Adele, who is up against Beyonce in three categories, received five nominations.
Beyonce in total has 62 Grammy nominations, making her the fourth-most nominated artist ever. She won 20 trophies so far and yet to clinch the 'album of the year' award.
2017 Grammys awards ceremony will see star-studded performances from the likes of Katy Perry, Adele, The Weeknd and Daft Punk, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and Metallica, Chance The Rapper, John Legend, and Alicia Keys. Beyonce will also likely perform at the event, just days after announcing her second pregnancy. Given the current political atmosphere of the US, political statements are expected to be made.
2017 Grammys could see some big names give it a miss. Kanye West, nominated for best rap album, said he would boycott the awards ceremony if Frank Ocean wasn't nominated. It is to be seen if he would do so. Justin Bieber too would allegedly miss the event because he "doesn't think Grammys are relevant or representative, especially when it comes to young singers."
Frank Ocean's critically acclaimed "Blonde" didn't receive a nomination after the hip-hop star declined to submit his record for consideration. He cited dissatisfaction with Grammys for not representing black artists very well.
