'Dhurandhar': Karachi cop's widow threatens legal action over husband's portrayal
What's the story
The widow of Chaudhary Aslam, a renowned Pakistani police officer, has threatened legal action against the upcoming film Dhurandhar if her husband is portrayed negatively, reported PTI. Aslam was famous for being an encounter specialist and fighting terrorism. The movie stars Ranveer Singh and Sanjay Dutt and is directed by Aditya Dhar. The trailer, released earlier this month, gives a sneak peek into a story set in Karachi's infamous Lyari area.
Legal action
Aslam's widow awaits film release for assessment
Naureen Aslam, the widow of the late police officer, told Geo Digital that she would wait for the film's release on December 5 to assess how her husband is portrayed. She took offense at a line in the trailer that referred to Aslam as being born from "the devil and a jinn." "We are Muslims and such words are disrespectful to not only Aslam but his mother as well who was a simple, honest woman," she said.
Film details
'Dhurandhar' features Aslam's character and Karachi's notorious gangs
In Dhurandhar, Dutt plays Aslam, who was killed in a car bomb attack by the Mohmand chapter of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban on January 9, 2014. The film also features Akshaye Khanna as Rehman Dakait, R Madhavan as Indian spy master Ajay Sanyal, and Arjun Rampal as Major Iqbal from ISI.
Another lawsuit
Major Mohit Sharma's family also threatens legal action
Separately, the family of Major Mohit Sharma has filed a lawsuit against the makers of Dhurandhar. They allege that their son's life has been "exploited" without permission. The petitioners, Sushila and Rajendra Prasad Sharma, claim that the film is being marketed as "inspired by true events" and has been connected to their son's operations and sacrifice. They seek a stay on the film's release until their concerns are addressed.
Producer's statement
'Dhurandhar' director clarified film is not about Major Sharma
Earlier this week, Dhar posted a clarification on X and said, "Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification." "If we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family." The film is produced by Dhar and his brother Lokesh Dhar under their banner B62 Studios, in collaboration with Deshpande's Jio Studios.
