'Massive concealment': Sunjay's mother accuses Priya of hiding his wealth
What's the story
The legal battle over the estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur has taken a new turn. His mother, Rani Kapur, has accused his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, of concealing her son's assets. The allegations were made by Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Rani, in the Delhi High Court on Monday. He claimed that while Kapur earned a salary of ₹60 crore, only ₹1.7 crore was disclosed in his bank accounts.
Allegations
'This gentleman had no life insurance, no rental income...'
Gaggar alleged that Sachdev Kapur has not disclosed important financial information and that there are suspicions of funds being transferred abroad. He said, "Massive concealment. This house (farmhouse in Delhi's Rajokri area) was built by (Rani Kapur's late) husband." "There are more than 50 pieces of artwork there...This gentleman (Kapur) had no life insurance, no rental income, and mutual funds? Just his salary was ₹60 crore, and we are saying that he has only Rs 1.7 crore in his accounts."
Legal proceedings
'Money has moved across borders, potentially'
Gaggar further added that any interim order should maintain the status quo as "money has moved across borders, potentially." He also challenged Sachdev Kapur's accusation that it was customary in the Kapur family for husbands to bequeath their assets to their wives. Rani's statement read, "How can you compare the two? She was married to Sunjay for seven years. This was his third and her second marriage." "I was married to my husband for forty years...Our Will was registered."
Background
Kapur's children have accused Sachdev of forging will
Kapur was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading auto parts manufacturer. He passed away in June while playing a polo match in London. He was married to actor Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016 and they have two children together, Samaira and Kiaan. He later married Sachdev in 2017. Samaira and Kiaan have filed a plea claiming that Sachdev Kapur has forged their father's will. The next hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
