Articles about Tom Alter
A proud recipient of the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India, Thomas Beach Alter, aka Tom Alter, was an established actor in the Hindi film industry. His parents lived in India, and he was born in Mussoorie, where he completed his schooling. Later, he moved to the US for higher education but soon returned to India after losing interest in his studies. Subsequently, inspired by actor Rajesh Khanna in 'Aradhana' (1969), he wished to establish a career in acting. Alter studied acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (1972-74) and then headed to Mumbai to find a film opportunity. His debut Hindi release was 'Charas' (1976) but in 1977, he got his first break in the industry with the film ‘Saheb Bahadur’ alongside Dev Anand. Over the years, he worked in numerous blockbuster movies, including ‘Shatranj Ke Khilari’, ‘Kranti’ and ‘Naukri’. The 2006 film ‘One Night with the King’ marked Alter's debut in Hollywood movies. In 2017, he was diagnosed with stage IV skin cancer, and he passed away in September the same year. Four of his movies were released posthumously, and the 2019 movie ‘Kitaab’, which was a short film, was Alter's last film.
