'Rangeela' was made on 'minimalistic budget,' reveals Urmila Matondkar
What's the story
Urmila Matondkar recently opened up about the making of her iconic film Rangeela, which has been re-released in theaters after 30 years. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she revealed that the movie was made on a "minimalistic budget," during a time when Bollywood preferred extravagant songs shot in Switzerland. The film also starred Aamir Khan and was directed by Ram Gopal Varma.
Filming details
'Rangeela' was shot mostly in Mumbai
Matondkar further revealed that not a single song from Rangeela was shot outside Mumbai, except for one song filmed in Goa. "It's not a movie made on a great budget. It was made on a minimalistic budget." "At the time when the whole industry was very obsessed with songs being shot in Switzerland, not a single song was shot out of India," she said.
Creative vision
'Rangeela' proves storytelling triumphs over lavish spending: Matondkar
Matondkar praised the film's creativity and vision, which proved that storytelling could triumph over lavish spending. "It shows that the story works in the long run, and the rest of the things are actually like beautiful accessories which can make the film look more beautiful and bigger." "But that is not what can ever save or make any film to begin with," she added.
Remake possibility
Matondkar open to 'Rangeela' remake
In the same interview, Matondkar also expressed her openness to a Rangeela remake. She said, "It's really a little silly and childish to think in an obsessive manner about your roles or of any work that you have done before. If anybody wants to do it, why not?" The film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
