A key Jammu and Kashmir politician, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari is the founder and President of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Between 2015 and 2018, Bukhari represented the Amira Kadal constituency for the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Bukhari held several positions under the PDP-led Jammu and Kashmir government including that of Minister of Finance, Minister of Education, and Minister of Labour and Employment. In 2018, Bukhari was expelled from PDP for anti-party activities. He launched the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party in 2020. In 2021, Bukhari said that if the Apni Party comes to power in Jammu and Kashmir, the Darbar Move tradition will be restored.
