J&K- Slain officer was on leave to attend cousin's wedding
Lt. Ummer Fayaz from Kulgam was on leave for his cousin's wedding. At 10pm, terrorists barged into the ceremony and dragged the 22-year-old away. The body was recovered four kilometers away the next morning. There were several injuries on his body, implying he had put up a stiff resistance. This is the first time since the 1990s that an officer on leave was killed.
Fayaz, a sports enthusiast, was "highly motivated"
Fayaz was a sports enthusiast, a member of hockey and volleyball teams at the NDA, his alma mater. Officials said he was "extraordinarily tough and highly motivated". After leaving the NDA in 2015, he trained at the IMA, and was inducted into the 2 Rajputana Rifles regiment. He had been chosen for the six-month "Young Officers Course", which was scheduled to start in September.
Thousands attend slain soldier's funeral
Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, Colonel of Rajputana Rifles, expressed anguish. "They killed a young and promising boy who was on leave to attend the wedding of his cousin and was unarmed. This only proves once again that they are just a bunch of criminals." Nearly a thousand people attended the funeral of the "local hero"; however, some youths also pelted stones at policemen.
Terrorists involved in army officer Ummer Fayaz's killing, identified
Defence sources on Thursday said 6 Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were involved in the kidnapping and murder of 22-year-old Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz from Kashmir. The sources added that a major manhunt has been initiated; security forces are conducting searches in various areas. Fayaz's bullet-riddled body was discovered in the Harmen area of Shopian on Wednesday morning.
Sentiments run high in Kashmir over local officer's murder
Locals are charged up after the killing of the lieutenant, who hailed from the Valley. Reportedly, the family hadn't contacted police or army because they thought terrorists wouldn't harm a Kashmiri. The Hizbul Mujahideen, which the army held responsible, has distanced itself from the murder, denying any role. Meanwhile, many locals claim it was an "inside job". "90% don't believe militants were involved."
School to be renamed in Lt. Fayaz's honor
A local school will be renamed as "Lt Ummer Goodwill School" in honor of the slain officer, the army declared. Earlier, Victor Force, General Officer Commanding Major General B.S. Raju, met Fayaz's family in Shopian and conveyed condolences.
