Assam: Bodo students hit the streets over ST status row

India

On Thursday, thousands of students from a tribal community marched through Kokrajhar, protesting Assam's move to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six more communities.
The demonstration started at Bodoland University and ended at the BTC Secretariat, with some protesters breaking barricades and damaging property along the way.

Why are they upset?

Bodo groups worry that adding Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes to the ST list will shrink their own share of reservation benefits and political representation.
With security tight in Kokrajhar and university students even boycotting exams, it's clear there's strong opposition—and more student organizations may join in soon.
