CJI wants prisons rebranded as 'sudhar grih' to focus on 2nd chances
India
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has called for prisons to be renamed "sudhar grih" (correctional homes) and emphasized that they are not meant for punishment alone but for rehabilitation.
Speaking at the opening of an Industrial Training Institute inside Bhondsi Jail, he said these places should help inmates rebuild their lives and become productive members of society.
Encouraging growth and support for inmates
CJI Kant encouraged inmates to use their time for self-improvement, acknowledging that jail time impacts not just them but also their families.
He also pointed out how tough circumstances can influence people's actions before they even reach court, and suggested more legal help for migrant workers struggling with documentation issues.
