Cyclone Montha causes massive losses in Andhra Pradesh

India

Cyclone Montha slammed into Andhra Pradesh at the end of October, leaving behind damages worth ₹6,384 crore.
With winds hitting 100km/h and heavy rain, the storm wrecked crops across 1.61 lakh acres—about 65,200 hectares—affecting paddy, cotton, green gram, maize, and others.

Why does it matter?

Beyond farms, the cyclone tore up about 5,000km of roads and damaged 311 bridges.
Nearly 4,500 homes and 1,800 schools were hit, and fish ponds over 3,000 hectares weren't spared either.
Power lines took a big blow too—losses in the power sector were reported at ₹41 crore as electric poles came down.

What's next for recovery?

A Central Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMCT) had conducted a field inspection on November 12 following preliminary submissions on losses by the State.
The state has asked for nearly ₹900 crore in emergency help from Delhi to start rebuilding homes and infrastructure after this tough hit.
