What's the story

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has unearthed ₹18 lakh in cash from Room 22 at Al-Falah University, NDTV reported on Saturday. The room was allotted to Shaheen Shahid, one of the suspects in the November 10 Delhi blast near Red Fort that killed at least 15 and injured many. The cash was found wrapped in a plastic bag inside a closet. Investigators are now probing the source of this large sum.

Legal proceedings

Shahid's arrest and court appearance

Shahid was taken by the NIA to different parts of the university campus during their investigation. She was also produced in court along with co-accused Muzammil Shakeel and Adeel Ahmed Rather. The trio has been arrested in connection with the Delhi blast probe and has lost their medical licenses after this incident.

Terror plot

Shahid and Shakeel's alleged involvement in terror activities

Shahid and Shakeel had bought a Maruti Suzuki Brezza in cash, which was among 32 cars being prepared for carrying explosives or delivering bombs. The vehicle was found on the campus of Al-Falah School of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Faridabad, Haryana. Reportedly, Shahid had been introduced to student groups and religious activities at the university, where she met Shakeel.

Radicalization

Shahid's alleged radicalization and role in terror organization

Shakeel revealed during interrogation that he and Shahid were married in September 2023. He said they met daily at work and shared similar professions, which strengthened their bond. During these meetings, Jamaat ul-Mominaat members approached Shahid to train her in radicalism and terrorist ideology. She allegedly used her medical identity to travel between Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi-NCR, and Haryana for fund transfers and message deliveries.

Leadership

Shahid's alleged leadership role in terror organization

Shahid was allegedly made in charge of the India branch of Jamaat ul-Mominaat, headed by Sadia Azhar, the sister of JeM founder Masood Azhar. She was tasked with forming a team of five "terror doctors." Umar Mohammad, aka Umar un Nabi, a Kashmiri doctor and suicide bomber who drove the white Hyundai i20 car, was also associated with Al-Falah University.
