Contempt of court- SC denies relief to Justice Karnan
The SC has denied relief to Justice CS Karnan, who has been sentenced to six-month imprisonment for contempt of court. "It is manifestly clear…that the petitioner intends to impugn and challenge the judicial order passed by this court on May 9, 2017," said the order. Justice Karnan had moved the SC seeking recall of the order. He has since been evading arrest.

Justice Chinnasamy Swaminathan Karnan was born on June 12, 1955 in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district. His father was a very well respected teacher who was awarded the President's award for his teaching efforts. Justice Karnan completed his LL.B from Madras Law College in 1983. He was appointed as a Madras High Court judge in 2008.
Justice CS Karnan has been a controversial figure and multiple instances have made news in the past. In 2011, he alleged victimization and harassment because he was a Dalit. In 2015, he accused the Chief Justice of Madras HC of interfering with his judicial work: SC had to intervene to resolve matter. In February 2016, Justice Karnan stayed his own transfer to Calcutta HC.

After Justice Karnan stayed his own transfer to Calcutta HC, the matter went to SC. However, he apologized and accepted that he passed an "erroneous order due to his mental frustration resulting in loss of mental balance."
Why contempt proceedings against Justice Karnan
Justice Karnan accused several sitting and retired judges of corruption. He has written letters to the PM, law minister and judges of other high courts. The SC took suo moto cognizance of the matter and issued a contempt-notice to him today. Until case is decided, he has been relieved of his duties and asked to return judicial and administration files to the court registrar.
SC orders psychiatric examination of Justice Karnan
The SC constituted a medical board to examine the psychological health of Justice Karnan in Kolkata. The court asked the DGP of Kolkata to assist the board in examining Justice Karnan.
SC sentences Justice Karnan to 6 months in prison
Taking suo moto cognizance of several letters written by Justice Karnan against judges in the Madras HC and the SC, the SC held him guilty of contempt of court. The court sentenced him to six months in prison "for contempt of Indian judiciary as well as judicial process." Karnan had recently issued suo moto orders convicting the CJI and sentencing him to 5-years imprisonment.
CS Karnan moves SC to recall 'illegal' jail order
After being charged with contempt of court on Tuesday, Calcutta HC judge Justice CS Karnan moved the Supreme Court to recall the 9th May order, saying it was "illegal." The petition was presented to the bench headed by CJI J.S. Khehar by advocate Mathew Nedumpara. The advocate on being asked, also told the bench that Justice Karnan is in Chennai.
