HRD Ministry wins support from IIMs on expansion plans
IIMs across India have agreed to the HRD Ministry's proposal to increase enrolment numbers from next year onwards. HRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar recently met with respective chairpersons and directors of 19 IIMs in Shillong to discuss expansion plans and other related issues. This decision follows shortly after the decision to increase capacity across IITS by 40 percent over the next three years.
IIMs Expansion Proposal
Under the current framework, roughly 3700 students are admitted across 19 IIMs in their post-graduate programme. According to the current proposal, IIMs will likely increase intake of students by 30-60 seats on a yearly basis for the next five years. Post the HRD Minister's meeting with representatives of IIMs, he said IIMs would individually submit expansion plans in this regard.

IIMs to assist government in building world class universities
HRD-Ministry's statement, "It was decided that IIMs will participate in a new initiative of government to make 20 world class universities/institutes. Of these 20 world class institutes that the government wishes to build, 10 institutes will be in government sector and 10 in private sector."
Fellowships for IIM scholars
HRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar also announced the expansion of the doctoral programme in order to address shortage of teaching faculty in IIMs. He proposed a fellowship scheme to support IIM scholars however stated that a a final decision would be the prerogative of the Cabinet. Last month, it was also announced that 1000 IIT students would be eligible under the 'Prime Minister Research-Fellowship' scheme.
Swayam: The MOOC Platform
Participation of the IIMs has been sought for the implementation of the 'Swayam' initiative. Swayam is a platform for massive open online courses (MOOC) that the government proposes to launch in the near future, according to Mr. Javadekar. The IIMs will assist in content creation required for Swayam which will offer 2,000 courses catering to students from Class IX up to the post-graduate level.
Swayam: Complemeting traditional education
In context of the role 'Swayam' would play in complementing traditional mode of education in India, the HRD Minister said, "The courses will be offered to students free of cost, online and through TV channels. They will comprise lecture materials, mid-exam, final exams and certificates."
