India steps up with major aid after Cyclone Ditwah hits Sri Lanka

India

After Cyclone Ditwah left parts of Sri Lanka devastated, India launched Operation Sagar Bandhu on November 28—flying in 21 tons of relief supplies and over 80 NDRF personnel to Colombo.
The Indian Air Force used its big C-130 and IL-76 planes for the urgent delivery.

What's happening in Sri Lanka?

Cyclone Ditwah brought intense rain, landslides, and floods, leaving at least 123 people dead and 130 still missing.
Over 200,000 people from more than 61,000 families have been affected. Power's out for about a third of the country.
Hard-hit areas include Kandy and Badulla.

How is India helping—and why does it matter?

India also sent help by sea with naval ships INS Vikrant and INS Udaigiri arriving earlier.
This quick response is part of India's Neighbourhood First policy—basically showing up for neighbors when it counts.
