India to pitch mega-arms deal with Russia during Putin visit

India

India is expected to discuss a major arms deal with Russia during President Vladimir Putin's visit this week, Bloomberg reported. The talks will focus on the possible purchase of next-generation Su-57 fighter jets and the advanced S-500 air defense system. India currently flies over 200 Russian fighter jets and has multiple S-400 air defense batteries, which were deployed during a brief war with Pakistan in May. No major agreements are expected to be finalized during this visit.

India-Russia defense ties remain strong amid US pressure

Despite pressure from Washington, India and Russia continue to maintain a "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership." Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly committed to preserving India's long-standing defense ties with Russia while strengthening relations with the United States. Although India has diversified its arms imports by buying more from the US and Europe, Russia continues to be its largest defense partner.

India seeks clarity on delayed S-400 deliveries

India is also likely to seek clarity on the delayed delivery of S-400 batteries during the Putin-Modi talks. Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said that discussions will focus on "broader elements of defense cooperation" rather than major announcements. "Additional S-400 systems are not off the table, but this meeting is not meant for major declarations," Singh said. He also said that Russia has assured India pending S-400 deliveries would be completed in FY 2026-27.

India-Russia Business Forum to boost economic ties

In addition to defense talks, economic cooperation will also be on the agenda during Putin's visit, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. A large India-Russia Business Forum will take place in New Delhi on December 4-5, coinciding with the visit. Both countries are working toward boosting bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030.
