India's S-400 missile defense: What's happening now?
India is ramping up its air defense by fast-tracking a deal to buy a large number of missiles for its S-400 "Sudarshan" systems—just ahead of PM Modi's meeting with Russia's President Putin on December 5.
This ₹10,000 crore ($1.1 billion) move comes as regional tensions rise, and India wants to stay prepared.
So, what exactly is the S-400?
The Russian-made S-400 Triumf is a high-tech shield that can spot and shoot down aircraft, cruise missiles, and even ballistic missiles from up to 380km away.
Earlier this year during Operation Sindoor, it made headlines by intercepting Pakistani fighter jets at a record distance of 314km.
What's next for India's defenses?
India isn't stopping at just more missiles—it's also in talks to double its S-400 regiments from five to 10.
Some could be built locally under Make in India, and Russia will help set up repair centers here too.
All this means stronger protection for the country—and some serious tech upgrades for the military.
