Kerala law colleges to reserve seats for transgender students
India
Kerala is now reserving two extra seats for transgender students in all its law colleges, covering both three-year and five-year LLB programs.
This change follows a petition by 22-year-old Esai Clara and was approved by the Bar Council of India after a Kerala High Court directive.
Why does it matter?
This move builds on Kerala's earlier steps to support transgender students in higher education and follows the Supreme Court's call for more inclusive policies.
By opening up legal education, Kerala is taking real action to include a group that's often left out.
The new seats kick in from the 2025-26 academic year, with plans to review how things go and possibly make this a permanent policy.
