Modi government plans to spend ₹1.31L crore extra this year
The Indian government has sought the Parliament's approval for an additional expenditure of ₹1.31 lakh crore in the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The request was made today through official documents submitted to the Parliament. In previous years, some supplementary demands for grants were met by savings within ministry allocations instead of increasing total expenditure.
Winter session of Parliament begins with key bills
The winter session of Parliament started today, with several important bills on the agenda. Among them is the Atomic Energy Bill, which seeks to establish rules for the use and regulation of atomic energy in India. The government has also listed the Higher Education Commission of India Bill and eight other draft laws for discussion during this session.
India's fiscal deficit higher than last year
In the first seven months of this financial year, India's fiscal deficit stood at ₹8.25 lakh crore. This is 52.6% of the full-year estimate and higher than the 46.5% recorded during the same period last year. The government aims to bring down the deficit to 4.4% of GDP this year, compared to 4.8% in the previous year.
