Expressing concern over the quality of Ganga water, the National Green Tribunal has asked why the river can't have health warnings like the ones on cigarette packs.

The National Green Tribunal today said the water of the Ganga river, between Haridwar in Uttarakhand and Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, was unfit for drinking and bathing and expressed anguish over the situation of the river.

The NGT today expressed dissatisfaction over the cleaning up of Ganga and said the situation was extraordinarily bad and hardly anything effective has been done to clean the river.

In March, the Uttarakhand High Court had declared that the river Ganges is a living entity.
