Over 10,000 staff vacancies hit Kendriya Vidyalayas

India

Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across India are dealing with a big staffing crunch—over 10,000 posts are vacant as of November 2025.
Most of these gaps are in teaching roles, and the government is still working on hiring to catch up.

Lots of hires, but still not enough teachers

Since 2014, KVs have brought in over 33,000 new staff (30,876 teachers), with a hiring peak in 2022-23.
To keep classes running when there aren't enough permanent teachers, KVs rely heavily on local contractual hires—over 10,000 were brought on board in 2022-23, while 6,920 were hired in the most recent academic year.

More schools opening as student numbers drop

Even though the government approved more than 140 new KVs in the last year alone, most haven't started operating yet.
Meanwhile, student admissions have dropped by over 55,000 since 2020-21.
Right now, about 1.35 million students study at around 1,280 KVs nationwide.
