Over 1.11 crore homes approved under PMAY—here's what that means

India

The government has greenlit over 1.11 crore houses for urban India through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and nearly 96 lakh of those are already built and handed over to people who need them most.
Launched back in 2015, PMAY aims to make sure everyone in cities can actually afford a place to live.

What's new: PMAY-U 2.0 targets even more families

PMAY-U 2.0 kicked off in September 2024, promising homes for another one crore families using four different approaches—building with beneficiaries, partnerships, rental options, and interest subsidies.
The central government has committed ₹2.05 lakh crore so far, with most of it already released and put to use by states.

Slum rehab: Still a work in progress

About 6.5 crore people still live in slums across India's cities—a huge challenge that mostly falls on state governments to fix.
For example, Delhi has managed to move over 3,400 eligible families into better housing with modern facilities as part of ongoing efforts to improve urban living conditions.
