Panjab University students end 27-day protest after demands met

India

After nearly a month of sit-ins and marches, Panjab University students have called off their protest.
The university agreed to key demands: announcing senate election dates, forwarding requests for withdrawal of cases (FIRs) against student protesters to the competent authorities, and scrapping the committee that vetted campus seminars.
The movement began after a government proposal threatened to cut student representation in university governance.

What went down on campus

The protest saw everything from peaceful sit-ins to a campus-wide bandh that even postponed two exams.
When the chancellor finally approved election dates on November 20, students celebrated and packed up their tents.
A committee also promised to push for withdrawal of FIRs against students and end the vetting process for seminars.

What's next?

A separate committee is still working on issues faced by Haryana students, with updates expected soon.
Meanwhile, the exam controller says new dates are being set for postponed papers so everyone can get back to normal academic life.
