Articles about Shaheen Bagh Protest
The Shaheen Bagh protest was a non-violent sit-in protest that was mostly led by women in Delhi. The protest started on December 15, 2019, and ended on March 24, 2020. The protest was called in response to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). It was known as the longest-running peaceful protest in modern India with more than 1,00,000 protesters being a part of it. Along with the CAA and NRC, the women also protested against the National Population Register, women’s safety, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. The protest affected over 1,00,000 vehicles daily causing traffic jams and the Delhi Police barricaded major roads around the area. The protest began with only 10 to 15 women which later attracted many other locals and turned into a 24x7 protest. The protest mainly included Muslim women who were wearing burqa and hijab. It also included children, newborn babies, professionals, activists, students, and elderly women. Many protesters supported the unions opposing the government’s anti-labor policies while many others cited the Jamia Millia Islamia attack. The protesters also used various art forms including photos, paintings, posters, graffiti, banners, and murals to continue their protest. On January 26, 2020, they also celebrated Republic Day when they unfurled the National flag at the site. The protest also inspired various other protests in cities like Kolkata, Pune, Patna, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and many others.
