Supreme Court to revisit NJAC plea after 8 years
The Supreme Court is set to take another look at a petition to bring back the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC), almost a decade after it was struck down.
Chief Justice Surya Kant responded to a request from an advocate during a hearing, following a request from an advocate.
Since the NJAC's removal in 2015, judge appointments have been handled by the Collegium—a system where senior judges pick new judges.
Why does it matter?
This matters because many people feel the current Collegium system is too secretive and puts too much power in just a few hands.
Even Justice Kant admits it isn't perfect, though he believes it protects judicial independence.
With recent debates about fairness and transparency heating up again, the court's decision could open doors for reforms that make how judges are chosen more open—without letting politics interfere.
