Four heavily armed terrorists, known as fidayeen, or a suicide squad, killed 17 soldiers and left 19 critically injured at a terror attack at the army's administrative base in Uri. The terror attack happened during the early hours, at around 4 am. The attack resulted in a six-hour gun battle in which all the four terrorists were killed.

Uri is a small town located in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district. The town is situated along the river Jhelum and has a population of about 400,900, according to the 2001 census. Uri is also located very close to Srinagar, and currently has the Indian Army's brigade headquarters stationed in the town. Uri falls along the de facto border, popularly known as the LoC.

"The administrative base had large strength of troops of units turning over after their tour of duty who were stationed in tents/temporary shelters which caught fire, and resulted in heavy casualties," the army said in a statement.
Specifics: Uri terror attack
The terrorists are said to have infiltrated through the border yesterday evening, and slipped into the army base, throwing grenades and firing indiscriminately. The attack happened when the units were turning over, with another brigade taking over to replace the current brigade. With fire spreading through the tents instantaneously, it killed dozens of soldiers immediately and critically injured the rest.
UN Secretary General, others condemn militant attack
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon condemned the militant attack, one of the worst the Indian military has faced in recent years. A statement from Ban's spokesperson said that the criminals must be identified and brought to justice. The US and UK also denounced the attack, while other Indian leaders and various political heads such as Sonia Gandhi, President Pranab Mukherjee condemned the terror attack.
DGMO Lt. Gen. Ranbir Singh: Will give befitting response
After confirming the involvement of foreign terrorists were behind the militant attack, DGMO's Lt. Gen Ranbir Singh said that the Indian Army would give a befitting response to the terror attack. Reports alleged that the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed might be involved.
Indian Army kills 10 terrorists in Uri
Two days after 18 Indian soldiers were killed in an attack on the army base in Uri, Indian Army killed 10 terrorists on 20th September, 2016. This took place in the Lachipura area of Jammu and Kashmir's Uri sector. The border ceasefire at the same sector was also breached by Pakistani troops. PM Modi nodded to isolating Pakistan diplomatically at international groupings.
Pakistan violates ceasefire in Poonch, Nowgam
Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire in Nowgam district today, targeting Indian posts this morning; full details are not yet available. This violation comes on the heels of a similar ceasefire violation in the Sabzian area of Poonch yesterday evening where Pakistani troops targeted Indian positions with small arms. So far no loss of life or injuries have been reported from either of the places.
India targeted terror camps across LoC: DGMO
India's Director General of Military Operations confirmed that India targeted several terror camps across the LoC last night, inflicting "heavy casualties", without letting out further details. The action was taken based on specific intelligence inputs about terrorists planning to cross over to India. Pakistan has denied that the operation took place; Pakistani defence minister Khwaja Asif threatened to use "tactical nukes" in response.
BSF post attacked by militants in Baramulla
Terrorists carried out an attempted attack on two camps belonging to Rashtriya Rifles and the BSF, located on the banks of the Jhelum. At least 2 terrorists and one BSF jawan were killed while one BSF jawan was injured in the attack. In addition, 10 armed terrorists attempted to infiltrate through a BSF post in Gurdaspur, Punjab and were repelled by BSF fire.
Ceasefire violation accompanies infiltration bid
While sources clarified that the situation at both Gurdaspur and Baramulla are under control, another BSF post was targeted by the Pakistan Rangers, violating the ceasefire in Gurdaspur. Firing is still underway at the BSF's Chakri post in Gurdaspur.
