Woman fakes being IAS officer, lands in jail for cheating and forgery

India

Kalpana Trimbakrao Bhagwat, 45, a former university assistant, was arrested on November 23 after allegedly posing as an IAS officer for nearly six months at a hotel in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
She used fake documents—including a tampered Aadhaar card and forged appointment letter—to pull off the act.
Police have charged her with cheating and forgery under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police uncover big money, foreign links, and suspicious travel

During the investigation, police found cheques worth ₹19 crore with Bhagwat and tracked around ₹32.6 lakh she got from various sources—including an Afghan national with whom she was in a live-in relationship and contacts in Pakistan, including her Afghan friend's brother and her own brother.
Forensic checks of her phone revealed at least 11 international contacts, including some linked to Pakistan (such as "Peshawar Cantonment Board") and Afghanistan (such as "Afghan embassy"), plus regular chats with an Afghan national in Delhi.
She also tried to get Indian visas for foreigners and traveled to cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Udaipur, and Manipur—meeting unknown people along the way.
Her police custody has been extended as authorities dig deeper into her finances and possible international connections.
