Jignesh Mevani is a former journalist, lawyer-activist, and politician who represents the Vadgam constituency in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. He is the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM; State Dalit Rights Platform). Mevani was born on December 11, 1980, in Gujarat and completed his education at Gujarat University and Bhavan’s College. Mevani worked as a journalist for three years following which he decided to become an activist. He started his career in activism through various trade unions and also worked with RTI activist Bharatsinh Zala. Later, he joined the civil rights organization called Jan Sangharsh Manch. In the past few years, Mevani played a crucial role in the Dalit agitation against the BJP and the Narendra Modi government. He gained recognition during the protests following the Una flogging incident. Protests broke out across the state after a cow protection coup attacked some Dalit youths in Gujarat’s Una village. Mevani had also led a protest march called Dalit Asmita Yatra from Ahmedabad to Una. He is also a vocal supporter of labor rights and a proponent of land reform in India.
