Chaudhary Ajit Singh was a senior Indian politician and the founding leader of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) from Uttar Pradesh. Singh did his B Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and initially worked as a computer scientist in the United States. He is the son of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, whom he replaced in the Rajya Sabha in 1986 when the latter's health deteriorated. Singh was a member of the Lok Sabha between 1989 and 2014, losing only once in between in the 1998 General Elections. Singh founded his last political party, the RLD, in 1996. He served as a Union Minister in various governments across political and ideological divides. Singh was the Minister of Commerce and Industry in the VP Singh government from 1989-1990; Minister for Food Processing Industries in the PV Narasimha Rao government during 1995-96; Minister of Agriculture in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-I government from 2001-2003; and Minister of Civil Aviation in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-II government during the 2011-14 period. Singh succumbed to COVID-19 in May 2021 at the age of 82.
