A four-decade-old law which prevented the Uttar Pradesh officials to pay their income tax has been repealed by the state government

Why was the law enacted in the first place?
The law was enacted in 1981 when VP Singh was Uttar Pradesh's, Chief Minister. When the bill was brought on the table for discussion, Singh had said that most of the ministers were from a poor background and got meager salaries.

Was opposition unaware?
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Lalji Verma said that he was not aware of the law. Verma mentioned that he used to pay his own taxes.
