When 22 MLAs of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly quit the Indian National Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, it led to a major political crisis in 2020. Jyodiraditya Scindia and 21 others quit the Congress party which led to the fall of the Kamal Nath government. Govind Singh Rajput was one of the big names that quit the party along with Scindia. Govind Singh Rajput was born on August 22, 1963. A post-graduate in politics from Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar, Rajput later completed his MBA from Punjab Technical University. He became a member of the legislative assembly for the first time in 2003 from Surkhi. He defeated BJP’s Bhupendra Singh by a margin of over 10,000 votes. He won for the second time in 2008. Rajput was defeated by Parul Sahu of BJP in the 2013 elections. He, however, won from Surkhi again in 2018. He was appointed as the Minister of Revenue and Transport in the Kamal Nath ministry. After his defection in 2020 to BJP, he was elected from Surkhi in the 2020 by-elections. Rajput was given the revenue and transport portfolio in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan ministry as well.
