Kavinder Gupta is an Indian politician who was born on December 2, 1959, in Jammu. He has served as the last Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Gupta was interested in politics from a young age and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of thirteen. During the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he was imprisoned for a period of thirteen months. Gupta had also served as the secretary of the Punjab unit of the Vishva Hindu Parishad from 1978-1979. He was appointed as the chief of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha of the Jammu and Kashmir unit from 1993-1998. He also served as the mayor of Jammu from 2005-2010. Gupta was elected speaker of the assembly in March 2015 and is the first BJP leader to be appointed as the speaker. He sparked controversy in February 2015 by blaming the Rohingya Muslim refugees for the 2018 Sunjuwan attack on an army camp. He was also criticized by opposition parties for calling the Kathua rape case a ‘small incident which should not be given too much importance.’ Later, Gupta claimed that the media had misinterpreted his statement.
