What's the story

Following a floor leaders' meeting in the room of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, it has been decided that the House will run smoothly from Wednesday, without any disruption, ANI reported. The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day at 2:05pm due to opposition protests over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Dilip Saika, who was in the Chair, urged opposition MPs to maintain decorum. Despite his appeals, proceedings could not continue due to continuous protests by opposition members.

Protest details

Opposition MPs disrupt proceedings with slogans

Opposition MPs continued their protest with slogans such as "vote chor, gaddi chod" from the well of the House. Birla summoned a meeting of party leaders to break the deadlock in the House. The Lok Sabha was adjourned thrice since proceedings began at 11:00am. The first adjournment came within minutes of commencement and the House reconvened at noon but could only function briefly. During these brief periods, ministers and MPs presented reports of various committees and participated in Question Hour.

Rijiju's criticism

Rajya Sabha also adjourned

Before the House was adjourned at noon, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju slammed the opposition for disrupting proceedings. He said while all issues are important, Parliament must function according to its rules. "We said from the first day that we should debate with a calm mind," he added. Similarly, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day amid the ongoing stalemate between the opposition and the Centre over the SIR.
