Post his return to India in the ‘70s, he served as an advisor, primarily on financial matters, in the Indian Government. He served as the Economic Adviser—Foreign Trade Ministry (1971-72), Chief Economic Adviser—Finance Ministry (1972-76), Director of both RBI and IDBI (1976-80), Secretary—Finance Ministry (1977-80), RBI’s Governor (1982-85), Deputy Chairman—Planning Commission (1985-87), Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister (1990-91). Singh is known for saving the country from a grave economic crisis in a series of liberalization policies, leading to a much-needed turnaround in the economy. Singh was appointed the Prime Minister in 2004 and held the post until 2014. After 2014, he has taken a step back from active politics, although he remains a part of the INC.
