Manohar Parrikar: News

Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar was a BJP politician and former Chief Minister of Goa. In 1978, Parrikar did his BTech in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Bombay. He joined the RSS as a youngster and later joined the BJP when the party was virtually non-existent in Goa. In 1994, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Goa from the Panaji constituency. Within six years, he became the Chief Minister of Goa for the first time, serving from 2000 to 2002. In 2002 Parrikar was re-elected and served till 2005. He became CM for the third time during the 2012-14 period. In 2014, he was moved to Delhi to serve in the newly-elected Narendra Modi Government and became the Defence Minister of India from 2014 to 2017. During his tenure, Parrikar notably oversaw the 2016 Surgical Strikes; signing of key military & strategic pacts with the US; and acquisition of 36 Rafale Multirole Combat Aircrafts from France’s Dassault Aviation. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. In 2017, Parrikar became CM for the fourth and final time. He was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer in 2018 and passed away in 2019, aged 63, in Panaji.
