Meira Kumar is a former diplomat, Indian National Congress (INC) politician, and former speaker of the Lok Sabha. She is a five-time Member of Parliament and a former minister in the UPA government at the Centre. Kumar is the daughter of noted politician Jagjivan Ram. She did her MA from Indraprastha College for Women and LLB from Faculty of Law, Delhi University. In her young years, Kumar worked as a social activist, and in 1973, she joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). She was posted at the Indian Embassy in Spain and the High Commission of India, United Kingdom. Kumar resigned from the IFS in 1985 to follow in the footsteps of her father and pursue a career in politics. She contested the 1985 Lok Sabha by-poll election for the Bijnor constituency and defeated Janata Dal’s Ram Vilas Paswan and BSP’s Mayawati. She was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996 and 1998. In 2004, Kumar got elected to the Lok Sabha from Sasaram in Bihar and retained the seat in the 2009 general elections. She served as the Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment during the UPA regime. In 2009, Kumar became the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha, serving till 2014.
