DMK treasurer and son of M Karunanidhi, MK Stalin has been elected as the working-president of the DMK; the post was created due to Karunanidhi's health issues. Earlier, there were fears that his brother MK Alagiri would oppose Stalin's ascension, however, it is now clear that Stalin will succeed M Karunanidhi. Jayalalithaa's death and Karunanidhi's health paved the way for new political-rivalry in TN.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is the Indian Parliament's third largest party. A political party from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, it currently holds power in Tamil Nadu. It was founded by M.G. Ramachandran on 17th October, 1972. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa has been leading the AIADMK since the year 1989.

    J. Jayalalithaa

Jayalalithaa Jayaram is an actress turned politician and the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She has served as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister six times since 1991. Jayalalithaa is the general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). She is commonly referred to as Tamil Nadu's 'Amma' by members of her party and its supporters.

    Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is a political party in the states of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in India. It was founded by C.N Annadurai in the year 1949. Karunanidhi, who has served Tamil Nadu as its chief minister several times, is the leader of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam since the year 1969. DMK is a breakaway faction from the Dravidar Kazhagam.

    Karunanidhi

The head of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Karunanidhi has been Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister five times. He has headed the DMK since the death of founder C.N. Annadurai. In Karunanidhi's political career, he has won every election that he's campaigned for. Since the year 1975, Karunanidhi has published six volumes of his autobiography which is called 'Nenjukku Neethi.'

    AIADMK's potential heir

Since the hospitalization of Jayalalithaa on 22nd September, 2016, numerous rumours and speculation have been making rounds. Curiosity about who will handle the state of affairs in her absence was put to rest on 13th October when O Panneerselvam was announced as the caretaker of Jayalalithaa's portfolios. This was the third time Panneerselvam was entrusted to take over the Chief Minister's duties.

    Karunanidhi's apparent heir to DMK

After being discharged from the hospital, Karunanidhi was visited by his son and an ousted party leader M K Azhagiri. Azhagiri's frequent visits was a cause for the rumour of his return to the party. Karunanidhi declared M K Stalin as the heir-apparent to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Azhagiri's constant visits to his father also created concern amongst supporters of M K Stalin.

TN politics halt with Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi's health

Admitted in the hospital since 22nd September, Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa suffered from a cardiac arrest on 5th December, 2016. On Thursday morning, DMK leader Karunanidhi was also admitted to a private hospital following an allergic reaction to his medications. Due to this, Tamil Nadu faces a dearth of leadership as the two were the most dominant faces of Tamil Nadu politics.

O Panneerselvam: The new TN CM

After Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's death due to cardiac arrest on 5 December, O Panneerselvam of the AIADMK became the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Karunanidhi re-admitted to hospital; undergoes trachesotomy

DMK President M Karunanidhi was re-admitted to Kauveri hospital in Chennai after complaining of breathing difficulties; he went through a trachesotomy for the same. Dr S Aravindan, Executive Director, Kauveri Hospital stated that "he is stable and is being treated by a team of doctors." He was admitted to hospital earlier on December 1 for "optimization of nutrition and hydration."
