DMK treasurer and son of M Karunanidhi, MK Stalin has been elected as the working-president of the DMK; the post was created due to Karunanidhi's health issues.
Earlier, there were fears that his brother MK Alagiri would oppose Stalin's ascension, however, it is now clear that Stalin will succeed M Karunanidhi.
Jayalalithaa's death and Karunanidhi's health paved the way for new political-rivalry in TN.

Curiosity about who will handle the state of affairs in her absence was put to rest on 13th October when O Panneerselvam was announced as the caretaker of Jayalalithaa's portfolios.
This was the third time Panneerselvam was entrusted to take over the Chief Minister's duties.

After being discharged from the hospital, Karunanidhi was visited by his son and an ousted party leader M K Azhagiri.
Azhagiri's frequent visits was a cause for the rumour of his return to the party.
Karunanidhi declared M K Stalin as the heir-apparent to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
Azhagiri's constant visits to his father also created concern amongst supporters of M K Stalin.

TN politics halt with Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi's health

Admitted in the hospital since 22nd September, Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa suffered from a cardiac arrest on 5th December, 2016.
On Thursday morning, DMK leader Karunanidhi was also admitted to a private hospital following an allergic reaction to his medications.
Due to this, Tamil Nadu faces a dearth of leadership as the two were the most dominant faces of Tamil Nadu politics.

Karunanidhi re-admitted to hospital; undergoes trachesotomy

DMK President M Karunanidhi was re-admitted to Kauveri hospital in Chennai after complaining of breathing difficulties; he went through a trachesotomy for the same.
Dr S Aravindan, Executive Director, Kauveri Hospital stated that "he is stable and is being treated by a team of doctors."
He was admitted to hospital earlier on December 1 for "optimization of nutrition and hydration."
