Winter Session: Both houses adjourned till 2pm
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2:00pm on the first day of the Winter Session, after a discussion on the motion of felicitation of new Chairman CP Radhakrishnan. Vice President Radhakrishnan, who took charge as Rajya Sabha chairman in September 2025, was welcomed by several MPs across party lines during the discussion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Radhakrishnan's inspiring political journey and lifelong commitment to social service.
PM Modi praises Radhakrishnan's commitment to social service
PM Modi said, "This is a moment of pride to welcome you and, under your guidance, take the nation on the path of development by taking important decisions." He added that he was confident MPs would maintain the dignity of both Radhakrishnan and the Upper House. The prime minister also praised Radhakrishnan's dedication to social service since his youth, calling it an inspiration for those interested in serving society.
Opposition leader urges Radhakrishnan to be impartial
Leader of the opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also welcomed Radhakrishnan but urged him to remain impartial. He quoted India's first Vice President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's acceptance speech, which emphasized fairness and impartiality in parliamentary democracy. Kharge's remarks about former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation drew opposition from ruling MPs. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized Kharge for mentioning Dhankhar's resignation, accusing Congress leaders of insulting the former chairman.
Lok Sabha adjourned amid opposition protests
Minutes earlier, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2:00pm after only 15 minutes of legislative business due to opposition protests over alleged electoral fraud. Speaker MP Sandhya Rai adjourned the house, criticizing opposition disruptions. Opposition leaders chanted slogans demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced two bills: Health Security se National Security Cess Bill and the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill. Both were introduced via voice vote.
