Articles about Antibody Test
Antibody tests can refer to either serological testing that detects the presence of specific antibodies in the blood or an antibody titer that measures the number of specific antibodies present in a sample. In the context of the coronavirus pandemic, antibody testing usually refers to serological testing. This diagnostic method is used to identify the antibodies and antigens present in a patient's blood sample. Besides testing for a person's immunity to various diseases including coronavirus, serological tests are also used to diagnose infections, autoimmune illnesses, and detect a person's blood type. In rare cases, they are also used to investigate forensic evidence. Through antibody tests, the method of identifying antibodies include ELISA, agglutination, complement-fixation, precipitation method, fluorescence, and chemiluminescence. It is important to note that antibody tests (serological testing) do not detect the presence of coronavirus infections in patients and could generate false positives. These tests only detect the presence of antibodies that combat infections and could be indicative of a diagnosed or undiagnosed infection/illness. To detect coronavirus infections, molecular RT-PCR tests and antigen tests detecting specific proteins are recommended.
