Articles about Google Plus
Google Plus, colloquially referred to as G+ is a now-defunct social network that was owned and operated by the search giant Google. It was unveiled in June 2011 to rival Facebook and other social media platforms by leveraging its ties to Google’s ecosystem products such as Drive and YouTube. The platform experienced strong growth in its initial years with creators flocking to the platform but user interest dwindled. Additionally, flawed software design allowed third-party developers to access users’ personal information. Due to this and low engagement, the Google+ developer API was shuttered in March 2019. The consumer-facing product met its end the next month on April 2, 2019. Google Enterprise customers could continue using G+ as “Google+ for G Suite” until they too were compelled to transition to Google Currents. In the subsequent months, Google allowed G+ users to download their G+ content including events, posts, and account logs before they were permanently deleted from Google servers. Associated Google services such as Drive and YouTube remained unaffected by the discontinuation of G+.
