Saina Nehwal wins Malaysian Masters
Saina Nehwal defeated Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong in the final match of women's singles to win the 2017 Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold. The Indian shuttler faced a tough fight from the teenager, but won the final encounter 22-20, 22-20. It is the first title win for Saina since her victory at the 2016 Australian Open in June last year.

The Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold is a second level badminton tournament. It was first played in the year 2009. It is the first of the 23 BWF Grand Prix Gold and Grand Prix tournaments of the year; the total prize money of the tournament is $120,000. PV Sindhu has won the title twice, in 2013 and 2016.
2017 Malaysia Masters from 17 January
The 2017 Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold is to take place from 17 January to 22 January at the Sibu Indoor Stadium in Sarawak, Malaysia. Defending men's and women's singles champion will not be the part of the tournament.
Indians at the 2017 Malaysian Masters
With PV Sindhu not participating in the tournament this year, Saina Nehwal will be top Indian shuttler at the 2017 Malaysian Masters. She will take part in the women's singles event. In men's singles event, Ajay Jayaram is leading India's charge. He is joined by Pratul Joshi, Siril Verma and Harsheel Dani. Indian shuttlers are also participating in doubles event for men's and women's.

After a successful run in the first, second and third rounds, Ajay Jayaram was handed a defeat in the quarter-finals of men's singles. He lost 21-13, 21-8 to Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

Top seeded Saina Nehwal reached the finals of 2017 Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold after defeating fifth seeded Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong. Saina registered an easy win in the semi-finals, winning the match in just two games 21-13, 21-10. She has also won all her previous matches in just two games. She will now face Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong in the final match.
