World number two Rafael Nadal was defeated by 18-year old Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the 2017 Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Montreal. Nadal lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (4-7) in the round of 16, ending his campaign in the tournament. Having defeated the top seed of the tournament, Denis will now clash with Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-final match.

Another week's wait for number one ranking

The loss at the Rogers Cup meant Nadal will have to wait to be the world number one, but for just another week. At the next week's Cincinnati Masters, either second ranked Nadal or world number three Roger Federer will replace top ranked Andy Murray.

Men's singles
Federer, Zverev advance into last eight

Second seeded Roger Federer advanced into the quarter-finals in Montreal after continuing his winning streak over Spain's David Ferrer. He will now meet Ferrer's compatriot Roberto Bautista. Germany's Alexander Zverev Jr. also sealed his place in the quarter-finals, and will meet world number 32 Kevin Anderson of South Africa. In another final eight match, Dutch player Robin Haase will meet Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

Women's singles
Top seeds in quarter-finals; Kerber loses

Top six seeds, with an exception of third seeded Angelique Kerber advanced into the quarter-final round in the women's singles event. In the quarter matches, top ranked Karolina Pliskova will meet sixth-ranked Caroline Wozniacki, while world number two Simona Halep will be up against 21st ranked Caroline Garcia. 2017 Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza will face Elina Svitolina and Lucie Safarova will meet Sloane Stephens.

Indians in the fray

Fourth seeded, Sania Mirza and her women's doubles partner Peng Shuai of China withdrew from the quarter final match after the latter hurt her knee. No single point was played in the match. Rohan Bopanna and Ivan Dodig went past Karen Khachanov and Dominic Thiem in the pre-quarter finals match and will meet French pair of Gael Monfils and Benoit Paire in the quarters.

Federer cruises into finals of Canadian Masters

Continuing his undefeated run in the Grand Slams and Masters 1000 level this year, Roger Federer entered the finals of the Rogers Cup. He will face Germany's 20-year old Alexander Zverev in a bid to win his 94th ATP tour title and third Canadian Masters title. The women's singles final will be played between Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina.

Bopanna, Dodig reach finals too

Rohan Bopanna and Ivan Dodig partnered in the men's doubles event and reached the finals to face French pair Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The Indo-Czech pair had defeated Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram 4-6, 7-6(10-8), 11-9 in the semi-final.
