Articles about Ajantha Mendis

For a generation of cricket fans who were not aware of Jack Iverson or John Gleeson, Sri Lankan cricketer Ajantha Mendis was the "mystery spinner." With his trademark "carrom ball," he bamboozled the batsmen worldwode. In 2016, he shot to fame after his debut first-class season for the Sri Lankan Army team, wherein he took 43 wickets. In 2007, he took 68 wickets from just nine matches. He made his international debut in 2008 against West Indies in ODIs. The 2008 Asia Cup proved to be his reckoning. Mendis took 17 wickets in the tournament and was adjudged the man of the series. This led to him being included in the Test team. In his debut Test against India, he took eight wickets for 132 runs, the second-best figures by a Sri Lankan on debut. Mendis ended the series with 26 wickets, breaking the record for most wickets by a bowler in a three-Test series previously held by Alec Bedser. In 2008, he won the ICC Emerging Player of the Year award. Mendis is the only bowler to take six wickets in a T20I, and he has done it twice. He retired from all forms of the game in 2019.
