Articles about Courtney Walsh
A stock bowler in the famed West Indian fast bowling unit in the '80s and one of the most lethal new-ball bowlers in the '90s, Courtney Andrew Walsh was one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history. Walsh made his first-class debut in 1981 and continued to play till 2001. In his first-class career, Walsh had a whooping 1,807 wickets with 104 fifers. He made his Test debut in 1984 against Australia. In a bowling lineup that had Curtly Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall, and Joel Garnel, Walsh was the workhorse. In the '90s, however, along with Ambrose, Walsh formed one of the most lethal new-ball partnerships in cricket history. In 49 Tests, they had 421 wickets together. Though he was not as fast as Ambrose, Walsh's ability to consistently bowl fast made him a threat. When he retired in 2001, Walsh was the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 519 wickets. Walsh also captained the team from 1994-97. His captaincy coincided with the time West Indies began to lose their aura in World Cricket. In 2010, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
