Waltherus Marijne, the new coach of Indian Men's hockey team
Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore has announced the appointment of Waltherus Norbertus Marijne as the new Chief Coach of Indian Men's hockey team. Dutchman Marijne currently coaches Indian Women's hockey team which is on tour in Europe. Marijne replacing the recently sacked Roelant Oltmans, had previously led the Netherlands U-21 Women's team to a World Cup victory.
On Monday, Hockey India announced that following Roelant Oltmans' termination, it would start the process to invite new applications for the post of the head coach of the national hockey team. By the end of this week, the official advertisement inviting applications would be published. The new coach will have to commit to the senior team until at least 2020.
Earlier, last week, after a three-day meeting of the Hockey India High Performance and Development Committee, Oltmans was sacked as the head coach. His role in improving the team's overall fitness and cohesiveness was appreciated. However, the results and the performance of the team were not consistent or up to the desired levels.
The Chairman of the Hockey India Selection Committee, Harbinder Singh, revealed that the decision was taken bearing in mind the important tournaments in the next couple of years. Meanwhile, David John, the High-Performance Director, will be taking charge as the interim coach. John will be at the helm until a suitable replacement is found so as to oversee a smooth transition.
