India win first test against New Zealand
India defeated New Zealand by 197 runs in the first test at Kanpur. Chasing a target of 434 runs on fifth day, New Zealand were bowled out on 236 runs as Ravichandran Ashwin picked up his 19th five-wicket haul. This was India's 130th test win in 500 test matches. India now has a lead of 1-0 in a three match series against New Zealand.
India's 500th test match
The Indian cricket team is playing its 500th test match against New Zealand at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur. It is the first of three test matches scheduled to be played between the two nations. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited former Indian captains to celebrate India's 500th test match. The captains were felicitated before the match started.
Vijay, Pujara help India reach 291 runs
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, India put a score of 291 runs for the loss of nine wickets at the end of day one. Cheteshwar Puraja and Murali Vijay scored 62 and 65 runs respectively, while Ravichandran Ashwin scored 40 runs. New Zealand's bowling attack was led by Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner, who took three wickets each.
New Zealand in solid position, but rain spoils play
India posted a score of 318 runs in the first innings. In reply, New Zealand's Tom Latham and captain Kane Williamson took charge of the batting on day two, scoring 152 runs. Latham scored 56 runs while Williamson scored 65, both remaining not out. However, heavy downpour forced the umpires to halt play after the end of the second session.
Jadeja, Ashwin bundle out NZ on day 3
Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin took five and four wickets respectively on day 3 to finish New Zealand's innings at 262. In the second innings, Vijay and Pujara both scored their second fifties of the match giving India a 215 run lead on day 3.
India declare innings at 377, set target of 434 runs
Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja helped India put a lead of over 400 runs on the fourth day of the Kanpur test. Sharma and Jadeja, both remained not out at 68 and 50 runs respectively. Earlier, Pujara and Vijay put together 133 runs for the second wicket. India set a target of 434 runs for New Zealand, with the fifth day of play remaining.
Ravichandran Ashwin takes 200th test wicket
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bagged his 200th wicket in the first test match against New Zealand at Kanpur. His 200th wicket was the captain of New Zealand, Kane Williamson. Having played 37 test matches, Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler and second fastest in the world to achieve the feat of 200 wickets. Australia's Clarrie Grimmett achieved the feat in 36 tests.
Ravindra Jadeja named "man of the match"
Ravindra Jadeja was named as the 'man of the match' for his all round performance. He scored unbeaten 42 and 50 runs and picked six wickets giving away 131 runs.
