Articles about Jonty Rhodes
One of the most iconic photographs in cricket history was taken by Jim Fenwick during the 1992 World Cup game between South Africa and Pakistan. The subject of the photograph was a fielder diving full-length with the ball in his hand towards the wicket to get the batsman out. The fielder was Jonty Rhodes—the man showed the cricketing world the importance of fielding and arguably one of the best at backward point. Hailing from Pietermaritzburg in South Africa, Rhodes was a gifted athlete from a very early age. He was an excellent hockey player as well. It was, however, cricket that Rhodes chose to pursue. He made his ODI debut in 1992 against Australia. His Test debut came in the same year against India. In the earlier part of his career, his selection to the national team was mainly based on his fielding abilities. With time and hard work, Rhodes overhauled his batting technique post-1997, and this led to an impressive average of above 50 in Tests in the latter stage of his career. Rhodes retired from Tests in 2001, and he played his last ODI match in the 2003 World Cup.
