Born on March 28, 1968, Nasser Hussain is an Indian-born former English player, former captain of the England cricket team, and a cricket commentator. Born in Tamil Nadu, Hussain is a Shia Muslim and of a descendent of Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nawab of Arcot State in the 18th century. He is the son of Raza Jawad Hussain, a Ranji cricket player from India, and brother of Mehriyar Mel Hussain, who is a former England domestic player. Regarded as one of the most successful Test captains, Hussain made his Test debut in 1990 against West Indies. Between 1990 and 2004, Hussain played 96 matches and scored 14 centuries with a batting average of 36.48. Between 1999 and 2003, he was the captain of the England cricket team for 45 Test matches. Under his captainship, England won 17 Test matches. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 1989 and between 1989 and 2003 played 88 ODI matches, with a batting average of 30.29. He retired in 2004 from all formats of cricket. Following his retirement, he joined Sky Sports as a commentator. Hussain played a small role as himself in the 2011 Bollywood movie ‘Patiala House,’ along with actor Akshay Kumar. Hussain also authored an autobiography ‘Playing With Fire,’ in 2005.
